I was indeed following the incorrect installation guide. Now it worked, thank you!

I got past this situation, what I changed was instead of giving the path to healpix using "~/eSASS.../etc." with "~" as home I wrote the full path to the folder "/home/username/eSASS.../etc". I am not sure this is the problem but this what worked for me
