If I merge all event files from the DR1 tiles with evtool, I get 172885752 events.
Can someone confirm this is correct, and that merging all the tiles in this way will indeed produce a unique list (e.g. with no duplicates)?

I've never encountered anyone attempting to merge all the eRASS1 events into one FITS file with evtool. Please be aware that such large operations are currently untested by us!
However, through a separate method I obtain 172886925 events, which is very close to your number. This also agrees with Table 8 in Merloni et al., which gives the total number as 170 million.
